We met James Surls in Waco at the Martin Museum of Art for this interview. That was after breakfast at IHOP. He was up bright and early and texted his location. I wonder how many other great artists you might otherwise overlook when eating at an ordinary breakfast joint.
There is so much good material from the interbiew, it was really hard to choose a take-out clip. But here it is- his recollection of the now infamous Dog Show, held in 1975 at SMU.
Please consider supporting us in our efforts to document the art scene in Dallas from the 1960s-1980s with a donation. The expected result is both a book and a video documentary, as well as web-only features.
